How Break Glass Access works
Why Break Glass Access
Not every website owner has admin rights. There are good reasons for that. With admin rights you can change a lot. Without the right knowledge a website can accidentally get damaged or even go offline.
That is why many website owners only get the rights they need — for example as author or editor. They can update text and upload images, without touching important settings.
But what if your web manager suddenly becomes unreachable — due to illness, bankruptcy or death? And something goes wrong with the website? You don’t want to depend on someone you can’t reach. Break Glass Access offers a solution.
With this plugin you can, regardless of your user role, create and download a complete backup of the website. That way you always have a safe copy and can have it restored or moved if needed.
The steps in detail
1
Without the web manager, on the emergency page.
2
The code is sent to an email address or mobile number set by the manager in advance. The client cannot change that number.
3
During emergency access, the website owner can only create a backup, nothing else. They are never given admin rights.
4
A complete copy via a server-side backup.
5
The owner hands the backup to a new manager, who restores it to a server and the website is back online.
6
Log, notification by email and SMS, and access expires automatically.
Why it is safe
Never admin by default
The website owner only creates a backup with their own role. No admin rights.
Access expires automatically
After the set time, emergency access closes automatically.
Everything is traceable
A log and notification for every step. Nothing goes unnoticed.
